Juneteenth Holiday

Posted Date: 06/17/26 (02:00 PM)

Dear Soledad Unified School District Staff, Families, and Community Members,

This Friday, June 19, we recognize and honor Juneteenth, a federal and state holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a day of both celebration and reflection—a time to recognize the struggles and achievements of those who came before us and to reaffirm our shared commitment to opportunity, dignity, and respect for all.

As a school district, we believe education plays a vital role in helping students understand our nation's history, appreciate diverse perspectives, and develop the knowledge, empathy, and character needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. Juneteenth reminds us of the importance of ensuring that every student and employee feels seen, valued, supported, and included.

We also take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of African Americans whose leadership, innovation, service, and perseverance have helped shape our nation, our state, our schools, and our communities.

In observance of Juneteenth, Soledad Unified School District schools and offices will be closed on Friday, June 19. We encourage our staff, students, and families to take time to learn about the significance of this day and reflect on the values of freedom, equality, and justice.

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us build a welcoming and inclusive community where every student can learn, grow, and succeed.

Sincerely,
Randy Bangs
Superintendent
